Putnam County Middle School receives grant money for CAPS program
Today State Representative Mickey Channell (R - Greensboro) received the good news that Putnam County Middle School was chosen to receive a $66,000 state educational grant. The funds will be used to implement the Comprehensive Academic Performance System (CAPS) program. Governor Sonny Perdue and State School Superintendent Kathy Cox announced the recipients of these grants, and touted the success of pilot CAPS programs in the city of Gainesville and Glynn County.
The CAPS system will provide teachers and parents with an effective means of tracking student achievement, and will allow teachers to provide individualized instruction to students. Teachers will be able to determine which areas of the curriculum need greater attention, and parents will be kept better informed of the progress of their children. The grant money will be used to fund one instructional coach who will work with the teachers on how to effectively use the data, and the remaining funds will go towards the development of the web-based accountability system.
Putnam County Middle School was chosen for the grant based on its commitment to standards-based education and a commitment to implementing the CAPS program. “I am pleased that Putnam County Middle School has been chosen for this award,” stated Rep. Channell, “and it is my hope that the CAPS program will assist teachers and parents in Putnam County as they seek to provide our children with a quality education.”
Representative Mickey Channell represents District 116 in the Georgia General Assembly which includes all or parts of Wilkes, Greene, Oglethorpe, and Putnam Counties. He may be reached at email@repmickeychannell.org or via phone at (706) 453-1230.
